Our Overlord the Subconscious Mind

Did you know that 80% of our lives are controlled through our subconscious minds? All of our habits, daily tasks, and routines are run by our subconscious minds!

Yoda is my guru

“Do or do not.  There is no try.”  . . . Yoda

Try is very wishy washy, it lacks commitment.  Lately, I’ve been “trying” to lose a little weight.  Until I stopped “trying”, I didn’t lose any weight.  Now that I have dropped the “trying”, I am actively working to lose those extra pounds.  The word “try” implies possible failure, it gives you an out.  So, next time you want to make a change or do something, just do it!

Space…the final frontier

Yoga Nidra is all about exploring our inner space. In my opinion, this is the final frontier, exploring our inner space, our subconscious and conscious minds, thoughts, emotions, energy, breath. All those intangible things that make us, us, yet we are aliens to ourselves.

Finding Joy In Unexpected Places

A year ago, last May, I experienced a moment of unexpected sheer joy. I had been plugging along working at a job that no longer gave me joy. This was the last month of my teaching career. Depleted and exhausted, counting the days until it was over, two friends invited me to watch something called Eurovision.

What is forgiveness

What is forgiveness

Recently, I made a mistake. I inadvertently double booked myself for two important events. Both events were scheduled long in advance and involved many other people. I don’t know what happened. Normally, I am pretty good at scheduling and checking to make sure there are no conflicts, this time however, I screwed up. When I found out about my mistake, it felt like I’d been punched in the gut. I felt nauseous, my heart sank into my stomach. Immediately, I sprung to action, notifying the people of one of the events of my error. I apologized profusely and asked for forgiveness for my stupidity. What happened next was unexpected.

Spring has sprung . . . maybe

Spring has sprung . . . maybe?

On this beautiful sunny, spring day, April 10th to be exact, I sit here relieved. Relieved that looking out my window is not a scene from Game of Thrones’ never ending winter. I joked with friends I expected to see white walkers at any time now, for those unfamiliar with Game of Thrones, white walkers are these zombie like creatures that exist north of the wall, in the frozen land where the wildlings live. All joking aside, one week ago, I was feeling bleak, uninspired, and as gloomy as the overcast sky. Today, I feel hopeful, inspired and ready to tackle procrastinated projects. What a difference a week can make. Fifteen inches of snow to green grass and blooming crocuses,

Desert Musings

While I can’t always go to the desert, I can create that same sense of broader perspective through my Yoga Nidra practice. As above, so below. The vastness of space exists within each of us. Shifting your perspective, creating space, letting go, connecting to that part of you that feels like home.

Words are spells

Just recently, I read in two different books about the power of words. We have all experienced this power when in an argument. Words can hurt. Sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never hurt you, never rang true because words have hurt me. One of the authors went further, suggesting that the words we speak cast a spell, that is where the term spelling comes from, the act of writing words.

Are you a human being or doing?

Are you a human being or doing?

Tending to your inner world is just as important as your external world. How you feel inside effects your health. There are countless studies that show the connection between mental health and physical health. Practices such as meditation and yoga nidra help address these inner needs, the need to turn in and tune in to your inner world.

Who takes care of you?

Who takes care of you?

Self care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. While a pedicure or massage would definitely count as self care, it doesn’t have to be big. It could be as simple as taking a moment to be fully present to your breath by counting backwards from 10.
