What is forgiveness

Recently, I made a mistake. I inadvertently double booked myself for two important events.  Both events were scheduled long in advance and involved many other people.  I don’t know what happened.  Normally, I am pretty good at scheduling and checking to make sure there are no conflicts, this time however, I screwed up.  When I found out about my mistake, it felt like I’d been punched in the gut.  I felt nauseous, my heart sank into my stomach.  Immediately, I sprung to action, notifying the people of one of the events of my error.  I apologized profusely and asked for forgiveness for my stupidity.  What happened next was unexpected.  The group rallied around me, not only shifting the entire event one whole day for me but applauded my mistake.  One member of the group said her family not only applauds wins but mistakes.  The entire group gave me a high five for my mistake!  I am still processing this dumbfounding response by these amazing people.  How is it that virtual strangers can forgive my incredibly stupid blunder so quickly, even high - 5 ing me for it, and yet I struggle to forgive myself?  Why is it so damn hard to forgive yourself?

For me, it is easier to muster compassion for others than myself.  At moments like these, I turn inward.  Using Yoga Nidra techniques, relaxing my body, looking in, welcoming, witnessing and recognizing all that arises.  Finding love and compassion that I have for others and turning it towards myself, I start feeling better.  Breathing in compassion to the places of judgement and self loathing, creating space, space for more love and forgiveness.  Yoga Nidra is a powerful practice.  If you are caught in a loop of struggling to forgive either yourself or others, you may want to sign up for Yoga Nidra this Sunday, April 23 at 7 pm MDT.  Our theme will be Forgiveness.

“When you forgive, it’s never about another person but freeing yourself from suffering. Forgiveness opens the door to compassion, love and acceptance for other people and ourselves.” Don Miguel Ruiz
