Our Overlord the Subconscious Mind

Over the last few months I have been studying the subconscious mind through hypnotherapy.   It has been a fascinating journey.  I am learning so much about our subconscious minds and the power we have to change our lives through awareness of and communication with our subconscious minds.  Did you know that 80% of our lives are controlled through our subconscious minds?  All of our habits, daily tasks, and routines are run by our subconscious minds!  While our conscious minds are present, the subconscious mind is great for running mundane tasks, it also controls our habitual responses to life, how and what we think and feel about ourselves and the world.  All of this controlled by part of our mind we are rarely aware of!  In addition, most of our subconscious beliefs are formed by the age of 10!  Most of us are operating off a system created when we were children.  While this may be difficult to accept, the good news is that the subconscious mind can be reprogrammed through two powerful modalities, Yoga Nidra and Hypnotherapy.  These modalities are highly effective tools that produce real and lasting change.

When someone cuts you off in traffic, do you have a habitual response?  Maybe an angry gesture or verbal assault on their character?  Just drawing from my own personal experiences, my middle finger is known to fly faster than I can think, in fact, just the other day I was walking my 13 year old dog on the sidewalk and a kid came racing down the sidewalk on his bike coming up from behind, no warning or bell and zoomed inches from me and my dog.  After jumping from being startled, my finger flew along with a few harsh words.  After seeing the biker was just a kid, I felt embarrassed for flipping off a kid (thankfully his back was to me and he didn’t see), to his credit, the kid stopped and yelled back asking if I was ok, you see, I think he wasn’t paying attention and didn’t see me.  Now, I felt even worse for flipping him off and cursing him under my breath.  But this is how the subconscious mind works.  Our automatic reactions to situations, sometimes they are appropriate, other times, not so much.

Being aware of our subconscious reactions is the first step in changing them if they are dysfunctional.  Without awareness, there is no change.  Yoga Nidra and hypnotherapy are great modalities for helping you become aware of your inner workings.  Both modalities use relaxation and observation to cultivate a deeper relationship with ourselves.  Awareness is the key to unraveling dysfunctional thoughts and patterns so we can live more fully and joyfully in the present moment.
