Are you a human being or doing?

We live in a time when our days are spent outwardly doing.  Being busy is a badge of honor.  Everything seems to evolve around the external, even in self care, the external, taking care of the physical body seems to be prioritized.  Our yoga classes focus on six pack abs and bodacious booties, instead of connecting the the mind, body and spirit.  Scrolling through social media you are inundated with exercise programs, weight loss plans, hair care, make-up, and clothing ads.  It seems to be all about the external.  How we look and what we do seems to be what our culture values the most.  Don’t get me wrong, taking care of your physical needs is important and everyone needs to do things.  Eating healthy, exercising, hygiene, these are important for our overall well being.  Maintaining employment is necessary for survival.  But that isn’t all we are, we all have an inner world that can have a tremendous impact on our external world.  If you fail to attend to the needs of the inner world, it may eventually end up impacting your outer world.  As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, I had a wake up call about 12 years ago when depression came and hit me upside the head.  It felt like a heavy, gray, storm cloud was above my head at all times.  The heaviness, the struggle to do daily tasks.  It took a toll on me, my family and basically everyone I encountered.  I tried to hide it, mask it but I know the energy that was coming off me at that time could not have been good or high vibe.  Ignoring my emotional and spiritual needs, I became an empty shell of myself.

Tending to your inner world is just as important as your external world.  How you feel inside effects your health. There are countless studies that show the connection between mental health and physical health.  Practices such as meditation and yoga nidra help address these inner needs, the need to turn in and tune in to your inner world.

Interested in starting a yoga nidra practice? Check out my Sunday afternoon zoom classes.
