Ever have an ear worm?

This may show my age but the song “What the world needs now is love sweet love” by Jackie DeShannon, keeps playing in my head.  My usual morning routine includes reading the news while drinking a cup of coffee.  Now, I find myself looking for something positive to read. The news has gotten too awful to read, it seems as though “everything is going to hell in a hand basket” as my mom would say.  The ongoing wars and atrocities, the economy and don’t even get me started on politics, it can be very overwhelming and disheartening.  So, I am imposing a news fast on myself, taking a break from the constant negative drum beat the news has become.

Not that I am suggesting burying your head in the sand, being informed is important but if you are starting to find that your overall mood is declining and you are not sure why, perhaps a little reflection on what you are ingesting may shed some light.

Being discerning about what we ingest, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually is critically important to our well being.  Paying attention to how you feel after reading some depressing news, or watching a violent movie is good feedback.  Perhaps cutting out some negative input may help your overall well being.  Even better, replacing the negative input with something positive and up lifting. Watch a funny movie or YouTube video, watch a video of baby goats in pajamas or whatever it is that makes you laugh out loud.  Mindfulness practices that focus on cultivating loving kindness, self love and self compassion has been my self practice focus these last few weeks.

If you would like to join me, I will be teaching Yoga Nidra tonight at 7 pm on Zoom.  The theme is Loving Kindness and Self Compassion because “what the world needs now is love sweet love.”

May you find peace in your heart,  a laugh in your belly and love in your life,

Kirsten
