Yoda is my guru

Due to copyright law, I cannot post a picture of Yoda. But here is a beautiful picture of a nebula!

As I disclosed in my last newsletter, I am basically a sci-fi nerd, so it won’t surprise you that I am also a Star Wars fan.  I came late to the Star Wars fan club, seeing my first Star Wars show in my thirties with my kids.  Star Wars, in my opinion, is a marvelous movie series epitomizing the Hero’s journey. The epic battle of good versus evil, the evolution of the heroes and villains, this is a classic tale that has deep roots in many mythological stories.  Fun fact, George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, was good friends with Joseph Campbell, a renowned writer of comparative mythology and religion.  So, it isn’t surprising that the story of Star Wars is rich with familiar mythical themes.

My favorite character is Yoda. Yoda is an ancient Jedi master who dispenses incredibly wise knowledge to the younger characters in the show.  One of these quotes has been floating around my conscious mind lately.

“Do or do not.  There is no try.”  . . . Yoda

Try is very wishy washy, it lacks commitment.  Lately, I’ve been “trying” to lose a little weight.  Until I stopped “trying”, I didn’t lose any weight.  Now that I have dropped the “trying”, I am actively working to lose those extra pounds.  The word “try” implies possible failure, it gives you an out.  So, next time you want to make a change or do something, just do it!  Dropping the “try” has proven to be very helpful in my life.  While there are times it is appropriate to use the word “try”, see how much more clarity you can get by not saying it!  You may be surprised at how much you say this word to yourself.

Have you been meaning to take more time for yourself?  Have you been wanting to schedule in some deep relaxation during your week?  Been meaning to “try” Yoga Nidra?

Well, you are in luck!  I am teaching a weekly Yoga Nidra Zoom Class on Wednesdays at 7 pm.
