Walking Towards Joy
A few weeks ago, I was recovering from a gnarly flu, which hit me right after I had just recovered from Covid. Back-to-back illnesses took a toll on my mental state, and I found myself retreating from everything—even the things that usually bring me joy. Having experienced depressive episodes in the past, I recognized the warning signs. I knew that if I didn’t take action, this apathy could deepen.
Normally, regular physical exercise is my go-to remedy for lifting the fog of depression. But this time, my body needed rest. Meditation provided some relief, but it wasn’t enough to lift my weary spirit. Desperate for something uplifting, I scoured streaming services for engaging content—only to realize I’d already exhausted all the interesting options. That’s when I stumbled upon The Lazy Gardener on YouTube.
For those who don’t know, I love to garden. Over the past few years, however, life had pulled me away from it. But as I watched video after video, I felt a familiar spark reignite. The Lazy Gardener rekindled my passion for sustainable gardening and landscaping. With each episode, my spirits lifted. Excitement replaced apathy as I imagined the possibilities for our yard.
I became obsessed with the idea of transforming our space into a sustainable, edible landscape—one that would require minimal maintenance once established. I spent hours poring over Pinterest, researching edible shade plants and curating lists of unique varieties suited to our yard’s conditions. With each new discovery, my enthusiasm grew. The fog that had settled over me began to lift, and before I knew it, I was putting my plans into action.
Weeks later, I’m still fueled by this excitement. Even after hours of yard work, my motivation remains strong. While the project will take months—possibly years—to fully realize, I feel undeterred. It’s incredible what can happen when you follow your excitement.
Some time ago, I came across the idea that when you follow your excitement, life unfolds synchronistically. The more you lean into what excites you, the less life feels like effort. Of course, there are always tasks that need to be done, like taxes and, well... picking up dog poop. But if you make a conscious effort to choose excitement whenever possible, life becomes a deeply satisfying journey.
So, I invite you to ask yourself: What excites you? What small step can you take today to follow that spark? If you're feeling stuck, uncertain, or weighed down by stress, there are ways to reconnect with your inner excitement.
Yoga Nidra can guide you into deep relaxation, allowing your subconscious to awaken fresh inspiration. Hypnotherapy can help you clear blocks and uncover what truly excites you. If you’re ready to move toward joy and ease, I’d love to support you on this journey. Let’s explore together—what excites you most?
