So, what exactly is Hypnotherapy?
Lately, there has been a lot of buzz about hypnotherapy. Back in 2018, I stumbled upon a program through Mind Valley by Marissa Peers. The program was called Uncompromised Life which was mainly about the belief “ I am not enough.” I signed up for the program, listened to the hypnotic programming recordings and watched the videos. Much to my surprise, it really worked! My confidence and self worth had a significant uptick. I found myself centered and relaxed even in the midst of conflict. This program opened my eyes to a whole new world of healing that was not only accessible but successful. This program literally changed the direction of my life. I became obsessed with learning everything I could about hypnotherapy and decided this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Help people heal and grow to their potential through hypnotherapy.
Recently, I graduated from the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy. I am now a certified hypnotherapist! It was an extraordinary and intense nine month experience and I am eager to share what I learned. A common response I get from people when I tell them I am a hypnotherapist, is “Can you make people quack like a duck?’” The truth is yes, if that is what they want but more importantly a hypnotist or hypnotherapist cannot make anyone do anything they do not want to do. Secondly, people do not go to hypnotherapy to quack like a duck. That is stage hypnotism which has nothing to do with hypnotherapy. A hypnotherapist has an ethical duty to respect their clients’ goals, however, quacking like a duck most likely would not be in the best interests of the client reaching their goals.
So, what is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a natural, yet altered state of mind where communication and responsiveness with the subconscious mind is present. It is a state that can be induced by a hypnotist or a person can induce the state themselves through self hypnosis. Additionally hypnosis can happen spontaneously throughout your day typically when doing repetitive activities. Have you ever been driving on the highway and missed your exit? This is called highway hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, where your mind is in a state of intensified attention and receptiveness. Unlike sleep, hypnosis is a state of hyper awareness, where your mind is open and receptive to ideas and suggestions. When artists are in the flow creating, they are often in a hypnotic state. It is a difficult thing to explain, as each person experiences hypnosis differently, however there are some common characteristics of the hypnotic state, they include being fully aware and present in the moment, extremely alert, open and responsive to suggestions, and hyper-acuity to name a few. Often after hypnosis there can be a sense of time distortion, where it felt like 15 minutes but actually an hour has passed.
Hypnotherapy is a powerful and practical healing modality that utilizes hypnosis to access the subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is responsible for 80% of our daily thoughts, actions and responses. The hypnotherapist induces hypnosis which creates a bridge to communicate with and responsiveness from the subconscious mind. This access to the subconscious mind is then used to address the client’s symptoms through a variety of powerful protocols including but not limited to hypnotic programming, gestalting with conflicting parts, childhood regression, and past life regression. Hypnotherapy uncovers the root of problems and symptoms to resolve and heal, resulting in resolution of the client’s symptoms. All hypnosis is basically self hypnosis because it requires 100% consent and buy in to induce hypnosis in the first place. All of the heavy lifting in hypnotherapy is done by the client. The hypnotherapist is basically facilitating the process by asking questions, reflective listening, and guiding the client to resolve their own issues. Anything that involves the mind, hypnotherapy can help.*
