The Power of Suggestion
Advertisers have understood the power of suggestion on human psychology for a long time. Showing us beautiful images that appeal to our egos, suggesting we too could have this beauty in our lives if we only purchased, their goods or services. I have fallen for this trap many times. One ridiculous purchase stands out. The Hairdini, which was basically a foam tube wrapped around a pliable mental wire. I had visions of my hair tamed into a perfectly coiled French roll or bun. I saw myself walking around with this beautiful hairstyle that happened in a matter of seconds with the help of the Hairdini. The ad showed women whisking their long locks into beautiful up dos, hairstyles that seemed like only seasoned hairstylists could summon. I had hoped that the Hairdini could do what most humans could not with my hair, magically whisk my thick, coarse, heavy hair into a beautifully coifed French roll in a matter of seconds. I remember the excitement when the Hairdini arrived in the mail. Pulling it out of the box it looked like a large foam banana. It seemed sturdy enough to harness my head of hair and I began to read the directions in earnest. Needless to say, the Hairdini was not as advertised. My hair slipping from the grip of the Hairdini instantly, Hairdini lying on the floor, a useless lump of foam and wire twisted into a knot and that all too familiar feeling of being duped once again by the power of suggestion. The myriad of gadgets, cleaners, skin and hair products are a testament to the extent of my gullibility in believing the advertising, a testament to the power of suggestion on my psyche.
I am not alone, most people are susceptible to the power of suggestion to varying degrees. First the suggestion needs to appeal to the person and second the person must believe that it can come true for them. The placebo effect is another example of the power of suggestion. If the person believes in an expected outcome then they are more likely to achieve that outcome.
This phenomenon is used to great effect in psychology and hypnotherapy to change habits, thinking patterns and emotional responses. What if we used this susceptibility to suggestions as a force for self improvement? This is exactly what Hypnotic Programming does, it uses our ability to take in suggestions and manifest the changes we desire.
