Seasons of Change: Embracing Life’s Transitions
Yesterday marked the autumn equinox, the day when hours of daylight and night are equal. This signals the start of a shift for those of us in the northern hemisphere—a transition to shorter days, longer nights, and the approach of winter. Transitions are powerful markers of change. As I’ve written before, change is the only constant. But transitions highlight more profound, noticeable shifts. We all experience them: from baby to child, from teenager to adult, from one stage of life to the next. Whether it's changing jobs, moving homes, or growing through life's various phases, how we navigate the inevitable emotions of these transitions determines how easy or challenging they feel.
Each season presents an opportunity to practice acceptance, to surrender to the emotions that transitions bring, and to move through them with grace. Not that it is required to move gracefully, you have the right to resist, dig your heels in and swear profusely, and trust me, I have done that many times. Yet, as I have transitioned into middle age, I realize that embracing change with optimism and hope makes the process easier. Change happens regardless of how we feel about it, and the only thing we can control is our response. Choosing to approach transitions as gracefully as possible means recognizing the lessons we have learned, honoring our growth, and appreciating how far we have come. It involves letting go of past regrets and disappointments, understanding that while they shaped who we are today, we no longer need to carry them forward.
Yesterday, I walked in the mountains under a crisp autumn sky, soaking up the last rays of sunshine. I watched how nature effortlessly navigates these transitions: leaves changing colors sending nutrients back to their roots, animals preparing for winter by gathering food, seeds dispersing in preparation for spring’s renewal. Nature moves gracefully, with purpose, in this quiet bustle of summer's end and autumn's beginning.
How do you handle transitions? Do you cling to what was, or do you embrace what’s coming?
