We Are Peace
Are you putting a lot of energy in maintaining your peace? Do you find that certain circumstances disturb your peace no matter what you do?
Well, congratulations! You are human! Unfortunately, there is no guidebook to being human, it is kind of a trial and error sort of adventure. That is why I like to read and listen to various spiritual teachings to help navigate through this crazy, incredible thing called life.
I have been listening to the audio book Peace Under All Circumstances by Matthew Brownstein. Matthew purports that peace is our true nature. We already possess the peace we seek, so there is no need to work on being peaceful. Whew, one less thing to do!
The idea that we already possess everything we need is comforting. We are not broken, we are just blocked. The work is to remove what is in the way of experiencing our peace. These blocks are created by our aversion or attraction to experiences. Basically holding on or pushing away experiences causes them to get stuck in our psyche, mind and body. Once we move through our blocks the peace within us is revealed.
When an event, thought or emotion sweeps into our consciousness, we have two choices. Get swept up into the event, thought or emotion, identifying completely with it or step back into our seat of Awareness and observe what is happening. Once we have attained this detached Awareness, we consciously relax behind what is happening, still observing, watching as we relax. What happens next, is miraculous, the event, thought or emotion subsides. Allowing events, thoughts and emotions to flow through us opens space for our true nature, peace, to shine through.
Every day I am fortunate enough to be presented with opportunities to practice witnessing from higher Awareness. From minor annoyances like traffic and the mega line at Costco to the more major life events like illness and loss, this practice can really help free us from the blocks to our peace. Viewing each moment as an opportunity to practice, it becomes a curiosity, an amusement, here it is again! Wonder what will happen next?
Yoga Nidra is a great way to practice being the observer. I have a long way to go but the more I practice the easier and more natural it becomes. Come practice with me tonight as we Relax into our Inner Peace.
Yoga Nidra Zoom Class tonight 7 pm. The theme for tonight’s class is Relax into Your Inner Peace.
